Editor of The Sunday Times John Witherow has defended his newspaper's use of the words "dyke on a bike" by the television critic AA Gill to describe the broadcaster Clare Balding.
In July, Ms Clare Balding complained to the Press Complaints Commission (PCC) about the review of her television show, calling it homophobic.
The PCC ruled that some of the words were indeed used in a "demeaning and gratuitous way".
But, speaking to the Leveson Inquiry into media ethics, Mr Witherow said the comment "was not pejorative in the context".
